An event titled "Overcoming Obstacles with Music Therapy" was held on May 11, 2022, within the scope of the Week of the Disabled on May 10-16.

Our event titled "Overcoming Obstacles with Music Therapy" organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Social Work on May 11, 2022 as part of the Week of the Disabled on May 10-16, was attended by speaker Prof. Dr. Şükrü Torun's posts and the questions of the participants were carried out actively.
Every year, 10-16 May is recognized as the "Week of Persons with Disabilities" in all countries that are members of the United Nations. This week is an important week in which the problems of the disabled are brought to the agenda and it is aimed to raise awareness. According to the World Health Organization's World Disability Report, more than 1 billion people, 15% of the world's population, live with disabilities. In our country, according to the National Disability Database, disabled individuals constitute 6.9% of the population. The seminar we prepared as the Social Work department in this important week, Dr. Instructor It was moderated by member Ferda Karadağ, and music therapy, which is an intervention method for disabled individuals, and its effectiveness were mentioned.
Music, which has a universal communication language, is very important for the social, cognitive and spiritual development of individuals with disabilities. Healing with music has a historical background dating back to ancient times. Music therapy, which is one of the treatment methods with music; It is a method that improves the sense of hearing in the individual and aims to increase the communication skills of the person through this sense.
The speaker at the seminar was Prof. Dr. Şükrü Torun emphasized that the previously accepted localization view has now been replaced by the Whole Brain view. It has been proven by brain imaging methods that music activates multiple areas at the same time instead of activating only a single area in the brain, and it was mentioned in the seminar that this is the reason why music therapy has an important place in history.
The seminar, in which it was emphasized that it is possible to overcome obstacles by working together in a multidisciplinary manner, was very beneficial with the questions and contributions of students and participants from different professions.
