An Orientation Program Was Organized for First-Year Social Work Students

An orientation program was organized by the Department of Social Work at the Bartın University (BARÜ) Faculty of Health Sciences on October 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM in Classroom 116, aimed at supporting first-year students in their adjustment to university and departmental life.

During the program, Prof. Dr. Elif Karahan, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, spoke to the students about the importance of developing themselves academically and socio-culturally during their university years and highlighted the benefits of studying at an accredited university. Vice Deans Asst. Prof. Dr. Hanifi Dülger and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ebru Cirban Ekrem also wished the students a successful and productive educational journey.

In the orientation program conducted by Asst. Prof. Dr. Hakan Karaman, students were provided with comprehensive information regarding Bartın University’s academic and administrative structure, mission and vision, leadership team, and educational processes. In addition to an introduction to the Social Work Department's academic structure and curriculum, information was shared regarding career and professional development opportunities available to students after graduation.

 

Introduction to Bartın and University Life

The program emphasized the importance of students adapting not only to the university but also to the city where they would pursue their education; information was provided regarding Bartın’s historical and cultural values, natural beauty, social life, and transportation options.

The program also showcased the opportunities BARÜ offers to support students' academic, personal, and social development. In this context, information was provided regarding access to library and information resources, student exchange programs, social and cultural activities, student clubs, career opportunities, and the quality assurance processes implemented at the university.

 

Focus on Addiction and Digital Risks

Another segment of the orientation program addressed various awareness-raising topics aimed at helping students lead a healthy and safe university life. Information was shared regarding the fight against addiction, types of addiction, and preventive approaches.

Attention was also drawn to current risks young people may encounter in digital environments, with a focus on online games of chance and betting, digital addiction, and cybercrimes. The importance of using digital environments consciously and safely, protecting personal information, and developing awareness of potential risks was emphasized.

 

A Conscious and Strong Start to University Life Is Important

Prof. Dr. Özge Özgür, Head of the Social Work Department, noted the significant role orientation activities play in helping students adapt to university life, stating: “We attach great importance to our students becoming familiar with the academic and social opportunities our university offers, establishing a strong bond with their departments, and making a conscious start to their educational journey. Furthermore, we consider it a vital part of university life for our young people to be aware of issues that are becoming increasingly significant today, such as addiction, online betting, and cyber risks.”

The program concluded after the students' questions were answered and mutual evaluations took place.
