Bartın University Midwifery Students Take Their First Step into the Profession with the White Coat Ceremony
The “First-Year Students’ White Coat Ceremony” organized by the Department of Midwifery at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Bartın University, was held on April 11, 2025, at the Ağdacı Campus Conference Hall. In this meaningful ceremony symbolizing the first steps of first-year midwifery students toward gaining their professional identity, the students donned their white uniforms under the guidance of the academic staff and received their symbolic fetoscopes as part of their ceremonial transition into the profession.
The ceremony commenced at 14:00 with a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, followed by an opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacer Yalnız Dilcen, Head of the Department of Midwifery. In her speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilcen emphasized the significance of the profession with the following words:
“Midwifery is a sacred profession that touches the most delicate phases of human life with its ancient roots, solid knowledge base, and strong ethical values. From now on, you are not only students, but also future professionals who will witness the beginning of life and stand beside women and families in their most vulnerable moments. The uniforms you will wear symbolize this professional stance and the trust that society places in you.”

Following this, Prof. Dr. Sevim Çelik, Vice Rector of Bartın University and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, addressed the first-year students:
“We have full confidence that under the guidance of your esteemed instructors, you will develop yourselves and practice your profession in the best possible manner. Remember, being equipped with knowledge is as essential as acting with conscience—both are foundational pillars of this profession.”

In the second session, Prof. Dr. Hava Özkan, faculty member at Atatürk University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery, delivered a presentation titled “Professional Identity in Midwifery: The Importance of Uniform Use.” The symbolic and professional meanings of the uniform in shaping professional identity were discussed within a scientific framework.
Starting at 15:00, the most touching part of the event—the “White Uniform Ceremony and the First Transition Ritual to the Midwifery Profession: Fetoscope Handover Ceremony”—was held. During this session, students received their uniforms. Under the guidance of faculty members, the students were ceremonially dressed and presented with fetoscopes, symbolizing the initial step of their professional journey. The entire ceremony took place in an emotionally enriched atmosphere accompanied by live music.
The event concluded at 16:00 with a closing session. The organizing committee of the ceremony included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacer Yalnız Dilcen, Assistant Prof. Dr. Hanifi Dülger, Assistant Prof. Dr. Yeliz Çakır Koçak, Research Assistant Dr. Güleser Ada, Research Assistant Ebru Bulut, and a team of students from the Midwifery Department.
