The “Disabled Mother-Handicapped Child Symposium” was held by the Faculty of Health Sciences of our University for the Disabled Week of May 10-16.

The “Disabled Mother-Handicapped Child Symposium” was held by the Faculty of Health Sciences of our University for the Disabled Week of May 10-16.

Participants from different provinces of Turkey showed great interest in the symposium organized online by the Faculty of Health Sciences of our university. In the event, which was held on the occasion of May 10-16, Disabled Week, opinions were exchanged over current discussions by providing information to raise awareness about “disabled mothers and children with disabilities” with different perspectives.

Making the opening speech of the event, Vice Rector of our University Prof. Dr. Sevim Çelik noted that the symposium aims to discuss the problems of disabled mothers and children with disabilities, develop solutions and guide disabled mothers and disabled children.

Prof. Dr. Çelik said, "According to the data of July 2020, the number of disabled people registered in the National Disability Database across Turkey is 2 million 530 thousand 376. 27 percent of this number is between 0-21 years old, 36 percent is between 22-49 years old and 37 percent is between 50-64 years old. These figures reveal the necessity of being aware of disabled people and finding solutions to their many problems such as health, education, social and employment. As Bartın University, we work with the support of all our stakeholders in order to meet the needs of our disabled students and staff and to become an unimpeded university. We aim to find solutions by producing projects for the problems of the obstacles in our province, region and country. " said.

Stating that 10-16 May Disabled Week is an important week for disabled individuals and their mothers, Vice Rector of our University Prof. Dr. Sedat Yazıcı said, “Awareness has always been an issue that has been voiced. However, families with disabled children experience many problems due to the lack of awareness in the society. There are important developments in this direction in our country as well as in the whole world. Our disabled people are more visible now. Families do not hide themselves and their children as before. This is an important development. Increasing public awareness is important in this important development. " used the expressions.

6 different conferences and evaluation meetings were held in the symposium that continued throughout the day. In this context, in the afternoon part of the event, Dr. Lecturer Özlem Demirel Bozkurt, "Reproductive Health Problems in Women with Disabilities", retired nurse Fatma Tuzcuoğlu "Being the Mother of a Disabled Child", Giresun University Faculty of Health Sciences Lecturer Assoc. Dr. Fadime Üstüner Top “Disabled Child and Health Problems” and Zonguldak Uzunmehmet Special Education Practice School II. Assistant Level Manager Ayşegül Çolak made a presentation entitled “Education for the Disabled”.

In the afternoon part of the symposium, our university's Faculty of Health Sciences academic staff member Dr. Lecturer Tuğçe Orkun Erkılıç, Vice Rector of our University, Faculty Member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr. Sevim Çelik gave a conference titled "Prevention of Home Accidents in Children with Disabilities", Sociologist Banu Başaran Canlı, "Disabled Rights and Services of the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services" at Bartın Provincial Directorate of Family, Labor and Social Services.

In the closing speech of the symposium, Prof. Dr. Çelik thanked those who contributed to the organization of the symposium and said, “I would like to thank Our Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun, the symposium secretaries, I would also like to thank who contributed to the organization of the symposium, Lecturer Ebru Cirban Ekrem and Lecturer Aylin Kurt, the academic and administrative human resources of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and our esteemed participants. " she spoke in the form.
